Homemade Vanilla Extract

This post on Passionate Homemaking inspired me to make homemade vanilla extract for Christmas gifts this year. It was an easy, fun & amazingly fragrant project to work on this cozy fall day.

I ordered these cute 4 oz recycled glass jars with cork lids & organic vanilla beans from mountainroseherbs.com. Got the jug of vodka at the local liquor store for $15.00.

You will need scissors to cut down the middle of the bean. Then snip into about 1-2 inch pieces & stick inside your jar. Afterwards fill with vodka or rum. Let steep for 8 weeks before using for full flavor. When you run out you may pour more alcohol over the same beans for another batch!

And here is the final product. Aren’t they cute? I will make some cute gift tags for them before gifting. Another cute idea would be to attach a recipe using the vanilla.
